This past Saturday night in the headliner of UFC Orlando, we saw a helluva battle in the welterweight division. Former title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (17-6-1) took on the entertaining Kevin Holland (23-9). Both men were looking to make a statement that they belong in contention at 170 pounds.

Many had wondered if Wonderboy was past his prime after his last two losses to Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns. However, Thompson was out to prove that it was just a case of bad matchups and Kevin Holland was lining up to be the perfect opponent for him to showcase his skills.

These two started going toe-to-toe right away and never wavered. Holland had some big moments including rocking Thompson early in the fight. However, Thompson was able to survive and Holland ended up hurting his hand. As the fight went on, Wonderboy started taking over.

Thompson brutalized Holland with a combination of kicks and blitz strikes. He even hit him with a clean wheel kick. Holland got dropped by Thompson near the end of the fourth round. At the end of the round, Holland’s corner stopped the fight saying he couldn’t go anymore and Thompson picked up the massive win at UFC Orlando.

What’s next after UFC Orlando?

This was a big win for Thompson and shows that he’s still a major factor at 170 pounds. However, he’s in a bit of a weird spot in terms of what’s next. I’ve been thinking about it and there’s one fight that makes a ton of sense for Wonderboy given where he’s at in his career.

If I’m the UFC matchmakers, I’m trying to book the rematch between Thompson and Jorge Masvidal. These two have fought before with Wonderboy getting the upperhand. Masvidal has been open about wanting a fight that gets him back into title contention and this would definitely be one.

It’s a fun fight for the fans and it’s another fight that Thompson would love from a stylistic standpoint. It’s a can’t miss if they can make the fight happen with Masvidal.
