Will Bellator and Eagle FC make the Fedor – JDS fight happen?

Fedor Emelianenko

This past Friday night, Eagle FC hosted their 47th event. One of the key observers of the event was Bellator president Scott Coker. In the main event, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos (21-10) was taking on Yorgan De Castro (9-3).

Why was Bellator and Scott Coker watching closely? Well, they were tuning in to see how Junior Dos Santos looked. They wanted to see him look good and pick up a win to potentially set up a big time matchup against Fedor Emelianenko (40-6).

The Last Emperor is nearing retirement and Bellator has been trying to figure out who to book him against for his retirement fight. Eagle FC founder and fellow Russian MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov floated the idea of a co-promotional fight featuring Fedor and JDS.

The idea was well received by Scott Coker. JDS was looking great on Friday night against De Castro. His speed looked very good and he was doing an excellent job working his kicks in with his tremendous boxing. He looked like he was going to cruise to a decision win.

However, the third round saw everything go up in smoke. Dos Santos was stalking De Castro and threw a right straight. When he landed, he landed on the forearm of De Castro. Immediately, his shoulder popped out of place and the fight was called off. JDS lost by injury TKO.

Is the Eagle FC – Bellator fight dead?

After the event concluded, Khabib Nurmagomedov said that he still thinks JDS – Fedor is the fight to make. He believes that what happened shouldn’t deter Bellator from being interested in making the fight considering how the fight went down.

Dos Santos was looking better than he had in a very long time. Yes, I know the opponent was Yorgan De Castro, but I was impressed. Considering the Bellator roster, I think JDS might be the best fight for Fedor. Roy Nelson has tried to throw his name in there, but come on. Nobody is really clamoring for that fight.

JDS is arguably the biggest name Fedor can fight and with a legend like Fedor, his last fight needs to be big. I think Scott Coker and Bellator are still very interested in the fight. The only other fight that could be made is letting Fedor fight for the title against Ryan Bader which is what Fedor wants more than anything.

I think the next month or two are going to be interesting, but either way, we should know who Fedor is facing at the end of the year soon.

Eagle FC 47 Recap: Junior Dos Santos shoulder injury caps off odd night

Tonight Eagle FC hosted their 47th event and they had a former heavyweight champion in the main event. Former UFC champion Junior Dos Santos (21-10) returned as he took on fellow UFC veteran Yorgan De Castro (9-3).

This was a huge fight for JDS as he was looking to snap a four-fight losing streak and he was looking to setup a potential fight with Fedor Emelianenko. Khabib Nurmagomedov and Scott Coker expressed interest in a co-promotion bout.

Throughout the first two rounds at Eagle FC 47, Dos Santos looked fantastic. He was chopping down the lead leg of Yorgan De Castro with brutal calf kicks and he was hitting him with crisp hooks. It was the best I’ve seen JDS in a while.

While De Castro of course had a punchers chance to win the fight, I even started writing the recap before the final bell. I thought the Eagle FC 47 main event was in the bag for JDS which would setup the Fedor fight.

However, disaster struck in the final round for the former UFC heavyweight champion. Dos Santos was stalking De Castro and throw a straight right hand. De Castro blocked the shot and JDS landed on the forearm of De Castro. When he did, his shoulder popped out of place and the fight was called off.

Truly nightmare scenario and De Castro picked up the TKO win at Eagle FC 47.

Odd Night at Eagle FC

In addition to the main event having an odd ending, the co-main event had an odd ending as well. Thiago Silva (21-9) and Hector Lombard (34-10-1) were fighting at light heavyweight in the Eagle FC co-main event.

Lombard looked good in the opening moments of the fight. In fact, he dropped the returning Thiago Silva and looked close to a finish. However, Silva survived and towards the end of the first round, he started taking over.

In the second round, Silva was really getting the better of Lombard. He sat him down with a beautiful right straight, but then he made a big mistake. He rushed in and landed a glancing knee while Lombard was on the ground.

While it didn’t look like Lombard was that hurt, the doctor came in and Lombard said he couldn’t continue. Personally, I think it was more of a case of fatigue. Anyway, the Eagle FC 47 co-main ended in a no-contest.

There were some solid fights throughout the night, but the two featured bouts ended in an extremely odd way. Not the night that Khabib Nurmagomedov and the rest of the Eagle FC leadership team wanted.

Eagle FC 47 Preview

Tomorrow night in Miami, Eagle FC will host their 47th card and they are bringing some heavy hitters for their main event. Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos (21-9) returns to action as he takes on another former UFC heavyweight in Yorgan De Castro (8-3).

De Castro earned himself a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series and won his first fight by knocking out Justin Tafa. However, after that, he lost three straight to get released from the promotion. After picking up a regional win, he signed with Eagle FC.

In his debut with the promotion, he submitted Shaun Asher in the first round. Now, he’s going to be taking on a former world champion in his second fight with Eagle FC.

This will be the first time that we’ve seen Junior Dos Santos compete since December of 2020. JDS last fought at UFC 256 when he was stopped by Ciryl Gane. The former champion lost his last four fights all by stoppage.

After his last UFC appearance, JDS was intent on doing some boxing. However, Eagle FC came calling and he decided to put the MMA gloves back on and he’s going into a main event tomorrow night. If he wins, Khabib Nurmagomedov has mentioned being interested in doing a cross-promotion fight with Bellator to book JDS against Fedor Emelianenko.

Eagle FC 47 Co-Main Event

In the co-main event tomorrow night, we are going to see a helluva fight in the Eagle FC light heavyweight division. Former world champion Hector Lombard (34-10-1) returns to MMA as he takes on UFC veteran Thiago Silva (21-9).

The last couple of years has seen Hector Lombard compete in BKFC. However, Eagle FC was able to bring him back to the cage and he’s going to bring his exciting style into the co-main event tomorrow night.

Overall in BKFC, Lombard went 3-1 and became a champion. He lost his last fight and then jumped to Eagle FC for the card tomorrow night. Speaking of long MMA layoffs, Thiago Silva will be fighting for the first time in over three years.

After going 16-3 in his MMA career and having a really solid run in the UFC, Silva was released after a domestic dispute with his ex-wife. From there, Silva spent some time on the regional circuit and went 5-6 in 11 fights.

Now, he’s returning at Eagle FC 47 and he’s ready to show that he’s still got some gas left in the tank. The full card can be seen below.

Eagle FC 46 Preview

Tomorrow night, Eagle FC will be hosting their 46th event and they have some high profiled names competing in the main event. We will see the debut of the super lightweight division of 165 pounds as UFC veterans Kevin Lee (18-7) and Diego Sanchez (30-13) will go to battle.

For Lee and Sanchez, this will be the first fight for both men after they were released from their UFC contracts. Both men signed with Eagle FC and both men are going to showcase this brand new division that only exists with Eagle FC.

For years, Kevin Lee struggled to find a home in terms of weight class. He competed at the highest level at lightweight, but he felt like he was depleting himself. Then, he could never really get things going at 170 pounds. Now, he gets to fight in a weight class that he wanted all along.

In his first fight at this weight, he takes on a legend. After a very eventful year and a half stretch, Diego Sanchez is back under the Eagle FC banner. The Nightmare is 3-2 in his last five fights and he’s looking to show he still has it tomorrow night.

Eagle FC Prediction and Preview

Kevin Lee is a sizable favorite for tomorrow night’s Eagle FC main event and he should be. To me, there is still plenty in the tank for Kevin Lee and I still believe that he can compete at a very high level. Not sure I can say the same for Diego Sanchez.

I’m expecting a pretty one-sided fight in the main event with Kevin Lee getting the nod. In the co-main event, we will see the Eagle FC heavyweight title on the line as Dana White Contender Series vet Rizvan Kuniev (11-2-1) takes on UFC vet Anthony Hamilton (18-10).

Given the news we learned yesterday, one of these guys might be in line to defend the title against Junior Dos Santos soon. One fight that should be garnering even more attention is the bantamweight fight between Ray Borg (15-5) and Ricky Bandejas (15-6).

Absolutely love this match-making from Eagle FC and I’m excited to see Borg back in action. When his mind is right, he’s incredibly talented and he’s going to be looking to pickup his third straight win since his departure from the UFC.

Junior Dos Santos signs with Eagle FC; Debuts in May against Yorgan De Castro

Eagle FC has swooped in and signed another former big time UFC fighter. This time, it’s a former UFC heavyweight champion. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was informed by Khabib Nurmagomedov that his promotion has signed an exclusive deal with Junior Dos Santos (21-9).

The former heavyweight champion has been trying to decide where to go for some time now after his UFC release. Eagle FC came in with a nice offer and JDS has signed on the dotted line and his first fight is already lined up.

Dos Santos will make his Eagle FC debut in May when he takes on another UFC veteran in Yorgan De Castro (8-3). De Castro was introduced to fans via Dana White’s Contender Series when he debuted as an undefeated prospect.

In his first UFC fight, he scored a huge knockout over Justin Tafa. However, after that fight, he lost three in a row leading him to not be resigned by the UFC. After one victory, Eagle FC signed him and he won his debut with them back in January.

Eagle FC Outlook

JDS signing with Eagle FC is definitely going to give them more eye balls with US fans. The former heavyweight champion is far removed from his prime, however, he still does carry a decent following of fans.

When Dos Santos debuts in May, he’s going to be looking to snap a four-fight losing streak. Prior to this losing streak, JDS looked like he was going to make another run towards the UFC heavyweight title.

However, that run fell off a cliff and he was ultimately released by the UFC late in 2020. Now, after having some time off he was ready to get back into the cage and Eagle FC was excited to bring him aboard.

I’ll be very interested to see how JDS looks when he makes his debut. It’s a solid matchup and another decent pairing for Khabib’s promotion as he tries to expand their US fan base.

Eagle FC 44 Preview

Tomorrow night, Eagle FC will officially touch down in the United States for the first time. The Russian led MMA promotion which is owned by former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will host their first event in the US.

Eagle FC 44 will take place in Miami and it starts at 6:00 PM ET. For all interested fans, the event is free to watch at EagleFC.com. The main event of the evening featuring a compelling matchup between two big heavyweights.

Former world champion kickboxer and undefeated boxer Tyrone Spong (2-0) will be competing in his third MMA fight. He will be taking on Pride, Bellator, and Strikeforce veteran Sergei Kharitonov (33-9).

Kharitonov lost fought in November when he stopped Fabio Maldonado. Prior to that, he lost in Bellator to Cheick Kongo. Eagle FC 44 will be the first time we’ve seen Spong compete in MMA since 2013.

After winning his first two MMA bouts, Spong has focused on boxing. However, Eagle FC was able to get him back into the cage and he will make the walk for the third time tomorrow. It’s obviously going to be key for him to keep the fight standing. If he does, this fight won’t last long.

Eagle FC 44 Preview

In addition to the heavyweights, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (19-8-1) will be returning tomorrow night. The former UFC champion hasn’t fought since 2018 after losing five straight fights.

However, he came out of retirement at 42 for this fight in Eagle FC. He will be taking on Brazilian contender Gabriel Checco (12-5). Checco has mainly fought on the regional scene and he’s coming off of a TKO win back in October.

In addition to Evans, there are other UFC veterans that are competing at Eagle FC 44. Those fighters include Yorgan De Castro, John Howard, and Cody Gibson. Gibson will actually be taking on former UFC title challenger Ray Borg (14-5).

Borg will be making his second appearance after he briefly retired. There were a lot of personal issues with Borg that forced him away from fighting in 2020. When he was on, Borg was one of the best flyweights in the UFC.

He is going to be fighting Gibson at bantamweight. If he looks really good tomorrow night, it’ll be interesting to see what comes next for Borg. Overall, I’m expecting a very solid night of fights and I would definitely recommend tuning in.

Kevin Lee – Diego Sanchez booked for Eagle FC event

Kevin Lee (18-7) made headlines when he signed with Eagle FC after his release from the UFC. The former UFC title challenger was introduced by the promotion that’s ran by former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Lee is going to be paid in Bitcoin and he is making his Eagle FC debut on March 11th. He’s going to be competing in the new 165 pound division that Eagle FC is putting forward. It was a mystery who Lee would be facing in his debut with the promotion.

We now know that Lee will be taking on the original Ultimate Fighter winner and former UFC title challenger Diego Sanchez (30-13). The fighters announced the fight on social media and it was later confirmed by MMA Junkie.

Lee is hoping for a bounce back in Eagle FC. Back in 2017, Lee was 16-2 and he was at the very top of the lightweight division. However, he ended his tenure with the promotion going just 2-5 in his final seven fights.

After that rough stretch, the UFC decided to let him go. Eagle FC was interested right away in bringing in Lee. This March event is their first show in the US and they wanted some proven talent.

Eagle FC Fight Night

Now shifting gears to the other Eagle FC addition, Diego Sanchez. Last year was quite the year for Sanchez who was also released by the UFC. However, Sanchez was released after an odd situation involving his former trainer and the promotion.

In May, Sanchez was supposed to face Cowboy Cerrone in his UFC retirement fight. However, the promotion cancelled the fight and released Sanchez. The rest of the year was a wild ride for Sanchez. He ended up getting Covid and spent some time in the hospital.

Now, he’s feeling much better and he’s ready to get back to fighting. With that, Eagle FC expressed immediate interest in bringing him in. They wanted a good name to face off with Lee and Sanchez fits the bill.

Overall, Sanchez closed out his UFC tenure going 3-2 in his last five fights. Granted one of those wins was a DQ win where he was losing the fight. Nevertheless, he’s going to bring a lot to the table in his Eagle FC debut and I’m sure people will be watching.
