The New York Yankees were one of the most talked about teams to start the season thanks to their use of the new torpedo bats. After they destroyed the Milwaukee Brewers in the opening weekend, players and teams across the league followed the trend of using the new bats.

Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm says torpedo bats give him ‘mental edge’

A few Yankees players have been open about their use of the bats, especially second baseman Jazz Chisholm, who has seemingly become the face of the torpedo bats debate. He went on MLB Network’s MLB Central and weighed in on why he likes the bats so much.

“I think it gives you a mental edge, you know what I mean?” said Chisholm, “When you’re a kid and you go up to the plate with a bigger barrel, you think you have a bigger barrel, a big bat, and you just start swinging it and you’re like, ‘Oh, I can hit everything with this bat.’ That’s just the mental of it.”

Chisholm seems to have more mental confidence at the plate, as he has already blasted four home runs in the early going of the season. He has cooled off a bit lately and seen his strikeout numbers rise, but the entire team struggled offensively against the great pitching the Detroit Tigers have.

The Yankees have flexed a ton of power to start the season

Chisholm isn’t the only Yankee to express a desire to use the bats, as shortstop Anthony Volpe and outfielder Cody Bellinger are also experimenting with the bats. Volpe in particular has also seen improved results, showcasing more power with four home runs through the first 12 games.

Superstar outfielder Aaron Judge is among those that are sticking with the regular bats, and he is having a torrid start himself and is looking to be right in the MVP race once again if this continues.

Chisholm and the Yankees will look to get their offense back on track when they take on the red-hot San Francisco Giants at Yankee Stadium on Friday. Marcus Stroman takes the mound for New York and Robbie Ray will be on the bump for San Francisco.
