Yankees’ show power and versatility in win vs. Twins: ‘That’s the kind of offense we’ve been waiting for’

The New York Yankees usually don’t rely on small ball to win games, but after a sweep, everything counts. Last night, they scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice, they successfully executed a sacrifice bunt and scored on a walk with the bases loaded in their 8-4 victory in Minnesota.

However, and perhaps more encouragingly, the Yankees went back to their old mashing ways late in the game when they were trying to put some ground between them and the Twins, as Gary Sanchez and Miguel Andujar hit home runs in the important victory.

Overall, it was, as DJ LeMahieu told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, a complete offensive performance and, hopefully, the start of a season turnaround.

“That’s the kind of offense that we’ve been waiting for,” the Yankees’ first baseman said. “We’ve shown flashes of it, but tonight was a complete offensive game for us. We’ve just got to keep it rolling.”

The Yankees catcher is red-hot

Andujar’s blast traveled 449 feet according to Statcast, and was the longest of his career.

Sanchez has been performing like a top catcher for a couple of weeks now. Since May 27, he is batting .353/.436/.618 with two homers and six RBIs. The Yankees, of course, are pleased.

“Every time you hit a homer, you feel good, because you’re helping your team,” Sánchez said through an interpreter. “The sensation is going to be good because you’re adding to the lead. I can’t carry the team by myself; it doesn’t work like that. That’s why we’re a team.”

“We haven’t been hitting homers as much as we normally do, or putting up crooked numbers as much as we do. Sometimes, it takes little things to win a ballgame. Tonight is that kind of game where everyone contributed in different ways. It was definitely good to see some situational stuff happen,” manager Aaron Boone said.
