The New York Yankees swept the Los Angeles Angels and demolished the Detroit Tigers on Friday with contributions from reserve outfielder Miguel Andujar. After Giancarlo Stanton suffered an ankle injury several weeks ago, the Bombers called upon Andujar to supplement him in the outfield and serve as the cleanup hitter.
During Stanton’s absence, Andujar made 12 starts, hitting .268 with three RBIs and a 16.3% strikeout rate. Offensively, he provided good production and held down the left-field position admirably.
Andujar posted a perfect fielding percentage with 22 put-outs on defense — a far better performance considering the liabilities he showed in the past as an outfielder.
The 27-year-old has been fighting for another opportunity at the Major League level for a few seasons, but the Yankees have only been utilizing him as a reserve option given their plethora of sluggers.
However, after management decided to send him back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Miguel requested a trade, according to Hector Gomez.
Apparently, this isn’t the first time that Andujar has requested a trade from the front office, but they see him as a valuable piece when injuries arise. Clearly, this has stopped him from making an impact in the MLB, which directly influences his paycheck.
This season, Andujar has made 26 appearances with Scranton, hitting .289 with a 33.7% on-base rate, including four homers and 10 RBIs. He’s been a solid offensive contributor, justifying more playing time. Unfortunately, there are more proficient players ahead of him, so Andujar has had a tough time cracking the lineup.
