Garrett Crochet could end up being moved at the trade deadline this year, and the Yankees are one of the teams eyeing his market. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are among teams that “love” the potential that the power left-handed arm brings, and they’re expected to shop for pitching at the deadline. The rotation and bullpen are both areas that the Yankees will likely have to address to push past the surging Baltimore Orioles, and Crochet would be one of the best pitchers they could land.

There are concerns about his workload, but teams believe he can put up big-time innings and the upside here is tantalizing.

This season Garrett Crochet has looked like a Cy Young candidate, sporting an excellent 3.25 ERA and leading the American League in strikeouts (124) as well. He’s second behind Tanner Houck in WAR (2.9) and he has even better underlying metrics. What makes Crochet such an enticing option is the ability to generate swings and misses at a high level with dominant velocity, and it could give them some more firepower at the top of the rotation.

Luis Gul being roughed up doesn’t change his overall effectiveness on the season with a 2.77 ERA and 3.00 xERA through 15 starts, and Gerrit Cole looked sharp in his first start back with the Yankees. With Crochet also having 2 more years of control after the 2024 season, the Yankees can end up having a dominant trio heading their rotation for the near future and extend their window of contention.

If the Yankees were to negotiate with the White Sox, you’d imagine that Spencer Jones would be part of a deal, which raises the question of whether they would be willing to part ways with the former first-round pick or not. He’s heating up in July after a rough start to his season, and it’ll be interesting to see what his value is on the trade market. The other question is how durable Crochet can be, as he has never recorded 100 innings in a season at the professional level.
