Jose Trevino will be hitting the 10-day injured list after he was pulled in the ninth inning during the Yankees’ win over the Orioles. It seemed to be a lower-body injury by the way he was limping after running home, and with just two days until the All-Star Break and a weird 11:30 AM start time on Sunday, it made sense to place him on the IL and give them added catching depth. In his place will be Carlos Narvaez, a defensive-minded catching prospect with some good power and plate recognition, with Austin Wells presumably taking over starting duties for now.
It’s a tough loss for the Yankees, as Jose Trevino delivered two key doubles in yesterday’s win and has put up a 103 wRC+ across 60 games with his usually excellent defensive value.
Jose Trevino Hits the 10-Day IL, Yankees Promote Carlos Narvaez
The Yankees were not going to promote Agustin Ramirez despite him having some excitement with his bat because the glove hasn’t reached the point they’d like it to just yet. Carlos Narvaez on the other hand has the defensive chops to handle a Major League pitching staff and has done an excellent job handling their pitchers in Spring Training where he’s seen plenty of action.
The 25-year-old backstop is slashing .269/.386/.443 with a 117 wRC+ across 71 games, hitting the ball with authority in the air more often. Narvaez will likely be their catcher against left-handed batters since he has a .556 SLG% and .371 wOBA against them this year in Triple-A, while Austin Wells will handle assignments against right-handed batters. This will be a test for Wells, who has been splitting time with Trevino evenly while getting hot in recent weeks at the plate.
As for Carlos Narvaez, it’ll be interesting to see if he gets a start in one of these two games against Baltimore, as he was promoted in their last series here for Alex Verdugo but couldn’t get into a game. The Yankees are hoping to snap a skid of eight consecutive series without a win, with their best performance being a series split in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
It’s unclear how severe this injury is for Jose Trevino or if it was just a precautionary measure to make sure it didn’t get worse. Aaron Boone mentioned that Trevino would undergo testing after the game, and we should expect some more news on how bad the injury is his usual pre-game availability sessions. If Carlos Narvaez gets into a game this could be his MLB debut, and I imagine they’ll also have Ben Rice on standby ready to catch if there’s any emergency of sorts.
