Everson Pereira was one of the better prospects in the Yankees’ organization last season, but after struggling in his small sample size of big league play, he would begin his season in Triple-A. Still dealing with some of the strikeout issues that plagued him last year, Everson Pereira was placed on the IL last month and hasn’t returned from his injury yet, but we’ve finally gotten word on the severity of the issue. The 23-year-old outfielder was ruled out of the rest of the season as he’s been placed on the full-season injured list by the Yankees earlier today.
He had put together a solid start to his 2024 campaign, but the Yankees will be without one of the outfielders on their 40-man roster as Pereira is done for the rest of the season.
Everson Pereira Placed on the Full-Season IL by Yankees
This year would be an important one for Everson Pereira, and he had finally gotten on a roll after struggling to open the season with the Scranton RailRiders. Through his first eight games, Pereira had a .200 AVG and 99 wRC+, striking over 40% of the time in the process and looking just as lost as he did at the Major League level last summer. From that point forward, his strikeout rate hovered around 30% (which still isn’t great) but he had a 123 wRC+ and .530 SLG%, and he looked particularly good over his last few games.
He had a 10.9% walk rate and 21.7% strikeout rate with a .866 OPS over his last 10 games leading up to what ended up being a season-ending injury. Pereira will end his MiLB season with 40 games played and 10 home runs, and this is a tough injury for a young player looking to make his mark in the Yankees’ farm system. Now, the Yankees will be without one of their better outfield prospects as they enter an important trade deadline, and he’ll have to build up his value and stock again in 2025.
The Yankees will have a 40-man roster spot opened up because of this devastating news, and this will also create a vacancy potentially at Triple-A, where the Scranton RailRiders are dealing with a myriad of injuries. The Major League outfield depth chart was very strong, so this doesn’t directly impact their plans for that position group, but Pereira was still young enough and inexperienced enough to make serious skill progressions and try to earn regular time with this organization or another in the big leagues.
