Currently, on a 4-13 slump over the last 17 games and down some key players, the New York Yankees need some good injury news.
At 4 o’clock this afternoon, Aaron Boone met with the media. He provided updates on two key Yankees, Giancarlo Stanton, and Luis Severino.
Starting with Stanton, Boone stated that he is expected to start a rehab assignment tomorrow with Double-A Somerset. Stanton is set to play Sunday as well. Boone said that Stanton will only play as a designated hitter. The expectation is that Stanton returns next week. The progress from one of the Yankees’ big bats is encouraging to hear.
Despite a low .228 batting average, in 80 games this season, Stanton has hit 24 home runs and driven in 61 runs. To add his power to the lineup will give the Yankees a needed boost.
Then, when it comes to Severino, who is currently on the 60-day IL, Boone shared that the Yankees pitcher is expected to throw live batting practice on Tuesday. In that session, Stanton is supposed to bat against Severino. The Yankees need all of the pitching help that they can get.
In 16 games started this year, Severino has a 5-3 record with a 3.45 ERA. Severino has a batting average against of .209 with 95 strikeouts and a 1.07 WHIP.
For the Yankees to get back on track, a healthy Stanton and Severino will be needed down the stretch.
