The New York Yankees took down the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday afternoon thanks to a walk-off single from Gleyber Torres. After Chad Green gave up a two-run blast to Austin Hedges in the top of the 8th inning, the Yankees fan themselves in a 4–3 deficit.
Luckily, some of their more inconsistent hitters up to this point came through, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubling to deep left field in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and Torres singling to right field, driving in IKF shortly after.
However, the celebrations were cut short as Yankee fans began throwing trash on the field at Myles Straw and Oscar Mercado.
“Obviously, there’s no place for throwing stuff on the field,” Yankee manager Aaron Boone said. “We certainly don’t want to put anyone in danger. We love the intensity, but you can’t be throwing stuff onto the field.”
Straw came to the defense of Steven Kwan, who ran into the left-field wall tracking down a flyball in the 9th inning. Kwan was obviously shaken up, laying on the floor for a few seconds after the collision.
“Kwan is the nicest guy on the planet,” Straw told reporters in the Cleveland clubhouse. “That’s my teammate, that’s my brother, and some of the stuff that was said to him, for me, wasn’t going to fly. My emotions got to me a bit. But a guy went headfirst into a hard wall. If I were to do it again, I’d probably say the same thing.”
Straw proceeded to climb the left-field fence to jaw back at the Yankee fans hurling insults at the Cleveland outfielders. Even the Yankee players came to their defense after the game, indicating their love and passion from the fans about how their aggression was over the top.
“That can’t happen,” said Kiner-Falefa. “I love the atmosphere, I love the fans, I love everything about them. But we win with class. That’s something that this organization is about. We’ll fix it next time, I hope.”
The Bombers will look to keep their fans tame on Sunday against Cleveland, as they look to extend their winning streak to three games.
