The New York Yankees backup pitching plan is a huge risk

Electing to stay put at the trade deadline was a bold move for New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. However, his hand may have been forced due to the lack of leverage he had in the market.

Competitors knew that the Yankees needed a starting pitcher, so they proceeded to demand untouchable players like Gleyber Torres. It was though that Cashman would have forfeited Miguel Andujar, Clint Frazier, or youth pitching sensation, Deivi Garcia.

The Yankees seem to be traveling down an exciting road that could force them into an uncomfortable situation given the injuries don’t grind to a halt. That scenario involved pulling up Garcia to start in an MLB game. After being shelled a few days ago at the Triple-A level, allowing six runs on eight hits over just five innings pitched.

The Yankees shouldn’t even consider the thought of bringing Deivi up if injuries aren’t playing a prominent part in the struggles of the rotation, but alternatively, he could be their last resort.

Garcia is a capable pitcher that’s working through the minor league system at a speedy rate. He has the potential to compete at the top level, but stunting his growth with a forced outing could set him back even further.

The New York Yankees made just one deadline move:

While the Houston Astros bolstered their pitching rotation with Zack Greinke, Cashman’s only move included Joe Harvey and Colorado Rockies Alfredo Garcia. A clean swap of pitchers, as the Yanks added a lefty to their farm system. Alfredo certainly won’t make an impact this season, but he has potential to play a role down the road.

The Yankees will stick with their relief options in Britton, Chapman, Khanle, Nestor Cortes, and Chad Green. Eventually, Dellin Betances will hopefully make a return. The timetable on his return continues to be extended.
