The New York Yankees have a big decision to make regarding Gleyber Torres and his future at shortstop. As we know, he’s a deficient fielder with above-average offensive capabilities. General manager Brian Cashman has already confirmed that he is a better second baseman, but they are sticking with him for the 2021 season at SS, hoping that he can develop and become their starter for the future.
However, the free-agent market for shortstops next season is flush with talent, but one reporter believes are the Yankees, and Colorado Rockies could strike a deal for a bonafide star.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden proposed a deal between the Yankees and Rockies, suggesting that star SS Trevor Story could be their next big-time infielder.

Of course, a deal of this magnitude is going to be painful for the Yankees because they would have to give up significant players to get this type of package. They aren’t going to include top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez in any deal (and they shouldn’t), but in this case, they would have to part with top pitching prospect Deivi GarcÃa, which would not be easy, but he has to be the headliner going to the Rockies if this trade is going to happen. … For the Yankees, this trade would dramatically improve their chances of a world championship in 2021.
Story is undoubtedly a phenomenal player, hitting .289 with 11 homers and 28 RBIs last season. In 2019, he hit .294 with 35 homers and 85 RBIs, striking out 26.5% and walking 8.8% of his at-bats. He’s a phenomenal offensive player and an equal defender. He recorded a .961 fielding percentage last year at shortstop, logging 44 double plays and 10 hours.
At 28 years old, Story is in his prime, but giving up Deivi Garcia, Loáisiga, Urshela, and Andujar is quite the haul. Personally, I wouldn’t agree with this blockbuster trade simply because the players departing have untapped potential.
