Jordan Montgomery made his 2019 debut with the New York Yankees Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Not having pitched since May of 2018, Montgomery went two full frames allowing three runs on four hits.
Not the best outing, but keep in mind Montgomery hasn’t pitched in the major leagues in over a year. He’s got great stuff and will find himself as he continues to work his innings.
“It went good,” said Montgomery after the game. “It definitely didn’t go great. But I’m healthy and I went out there and got my feet wet. I definitely have stuff to work on in the next week.”
The three runs allowed came from a single by Billy McKinney and a double by Richard Urena. In the bottom of the third, Randal Grichuk homered to right.
“Monty looked pretty good,” said manager Aaron Boone. “I thought his breaking ball wasn’t real sharp, although I thought he finished strong with it.”
Another Yankee pitcher to make his 2019 season debut was Dellin Betances. He went 0.2 innings pitched striking out both batters he faced.
To have him come out and be as sharp as his command as he was encouraging,” said Aaron Boone. “Hopefully he can put himself in a position to be an impact guy for us moving forward.”
“I knew I only had a couple of hitters,” Betances said. “That’s why I got a little excited out there.”
The New York Yankees finished 6-4 on their road trip and will head back to the Bronx for a series against the Los Angeles Angels. Luis Severino is expected to make his debut on Tuesday.
