New York Yankees: Who Will Be In The Outfield In 2020?

New York Yankees, Aaron Hicks, Brett Gardner, Cameron Maybin

It was announced the other day that New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks will undergo Tommy John surgery, putting him out for 8-10 months. The earliest he could possibly return is the end of June, so that shakes up the outfield big time for the start of the season. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton will obviously be on the team, but who will join them?

Brett Gardner

The person most likely to rejoin the Yankees in 2020 is Brett Gardner. He is a free-agent again but will likely be resigned, maybe even to a multi-year deal.

Gardner had arguably his best MLB season in 2019. He bat .251 with a career-high 28 RBIs and a 4.0 WAR. Despite a weak arm, he continued to show off his great glove with just two errors.

I’m not sure if he will start games, but he should be on the roster.

Cameron Maybin

Cameron Maybin is also a free-agent, but hinted that he may not return to the Yankees in 2020. But, things could of changed after the announcement of Hicks’s surgery.

Maybin hit .285 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs. Like Gardner, he is quite speedy and has a good glove. But, he still may not have a starting spot and could pursue one elsewhere.

Mike Tauchman

The Yankees really like Mike Tauchman, and he played better as the year went on but was unfortunately injured in September and lost the rest of the season.

He bat .277 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. He is a good outfielder, and has average speed. I bet that he has a better shot of making the team than Maybin, and could even have a shot to start.

Clint Frazier

The most unlikely outfielder to make the team for the Yankees is Clint Frazier. He has attitude problems, a poor glove, and has a reasonable shot at getting traded this offseason.

He bat .267 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs, but really struggled as a September call-up. He had just a 0.1 WAR his season and a has negative career WAR.
