New York Yankees Recaps: Yankees blow out the Blue Jays 12-1 with small ball

The New York York Yankees last night punished the Blue Jays 12-1, and they did with small ball. The game had the most significant number of runs scored by the Yankees without the aid of a single home run this season. The closest the Yankees came to a home run was at the top of the eighth inning, Kyle Higashioka hit double off the top of the wall in left, then it was changed to a home run, but on review, it was changed back to double.

After a bruising 11-5 loss on Monday night, the Yankees had a change of luck last night. On Monday, the Yankees hit the ball pretty well, but almost every time they hit the ball, it went directly to a Blue Jay. Last night most all of the hits were either over the head or found the gaps at Sahlen field.

Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Yankees and pitched a one-run gem. He allowed a single home run to Cavan Biggio, and that was the end of the scoring for the Blue Jays.  Cole pitched a solid seven innings, striking out seven Blue Jays with 108 pitches before being relieved by Zack Britton in the eighth and Adam Ottavino in the ninth pitched scoreless innings.  Yankee pitching only allowed five hits in the game.

The Yankees offense struck early and often in the game. Before Gerrit Cole got to take the mound, the Yankees had already scored two runs. Tanner Roark took the mound for the Blue Jays. Aaron Judge singled as he is finding his stroke, coming back from the IL. Aaron Hicks had a long single to right, and Judge motored all the way from first base for the first run of the night for the Yankees. It ended up being an RBI triple. Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kick had a passed ball, scoring Hicks from third, and it was Yankee 2-0.

At the top of the fourth inning, Gleyber Torres doubled, and Gio Urshela singled, driving in Torres for the Yankee 3-0 lead. The top of the fifth knocked Blue Jays starter, Tanner Roark, out of the game. With Kyle Higashioka and DJ LeMahieu on, Aaron Judge singled, driving in Higgy, the Jays through to third, but DJ was safe, and Judge trotted to second on the throw. Yankees 4-1. Aaron Hicks doubled, driving the two base runners, and it was 6-1 Yankees. Hicks was 2 for 4 on the night. Gleyber Torres ended the inning by scoring Hicks for the 7-1 lead.

Fast forward to the eighth inning, with Cole out of the game after pitching a gem; the New York Yankees scored another three runs in the inning. Brett Gardner drove in a run. The Yankees added two, with Hicks double off the top of the left-field wall, and it was 10-1 Yankees. At the ninth, the Yankees drove in two more runs for the final score of 12-1. Aaron Judge had 3 for 5 night, Torres 3-5, and Gio Urshela a 4 for 5 night. Luke Voit, who leads all of baseball with home runs (21), was hitless on the night.

Gerrit Cole got the win (7-3) and lowered his ERA to 2.84.  Tanner Roark took the loss. The New York Yankees have two more games against the Blue Jays in Buffalo, before ending their regular season back at Yankee Stadium against the Miami Marlins.
