After a poor effort in a 19-5 loss to the Indians on Thursday, the New York Yankees bounced back with a 3-2 win in a pitching duel led by Masahiro Tanaka on Friday.
Tanaka went 6 and 1/3, giving up just two runs off of four hits. He struck out two, and both runs came via the solo home run.
The Yankees got two in the first inning off of RBI singles by Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres. They got another run when Gio Urshela knocked a single to right in the fifth.
Tommy Kahnle faced two batters in relief of Tanaka in the seventh, and punched out both. Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman each pitched scoreless innings to end the game. Mike Ford dropped a throw from Didi Gregorius in the eighth, but no damage was done.
Aaron Civale pitched six decent innings for the Indians, but took the loss. Tanaka picked up his ninth win of the season.
James Paxton is expected to go on Saturday for the Yankees, while Zach Pleasac will be throwing for the Indians.
