After winning seven straight games, the New York Mets lost 5-1 to the Washington Nationals last night. The loss puts the Mets at 65-38 on the year. They now have a 2.5-game lead on the Atlanta Braves. The Mets have to win tonight and take this series from a 36-69 Nationals team before heading home for five with the Braves.

Jacob deGrom has a great debut

In his first outing in over a year, Jacob deGrom looked like his usual self. He pitched five innings and threw 59 pitches in this one. deGrom had six strikeouts, no walks, and three hits allowed. One earned run was given up by deGrom in his first game.

Overall, enough was shown by deGrom to feel good about what he will provide the Mets down the stretch. He should only build on his quality first outing.

After deGrom, Stephen Nogosek pitched an inning and struggled. He allowed two hits, both of which were homers, and three runs, all of which were earned.

Yoan Lopez pitched the seventh inning and gave up a solo home run along with another hit. Tommy Hunter threw the final inning with 29 pitches. He got two strikeouts but allowed a hit and a walk. Giving up three home runs in this one hurt the Mets and ended their long winning streak.

Six hits from the Mets lineup

After some stellar performances with the bats, the Mets lineup had six hits last night. Francisco Lindor continues to thrive. He is on a nine-game hitting streak. Last night, Lindor hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. He had a walk as well. On the year, Lindor now has 19 home runs and 74 RBIs, which ranks him sixth in the MLB.

Tyler Naquin gave the Mets two hits last night. The other three hits for the Mets in this one came from Starling Marte, Jeff McNeil, and Luis Guillorme. Daniel Vogelbach reached base with a walk as well.

For the Mets to take this series tonight, hits from Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo will be needed.
