New York Mets: David Peterson to make major league debut on Tuesday

New York Mets‘ left-handed prospect David Peterson will make his major league debut on Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. After Marcus Stroman’s calf injury left a hole in the rotation, it was evident that the team needed an extra arm, and after Corey Oswalt pitched four innings over the weekend, the team opted to call up the talented southpaw from their taxi squad.

Peterson is the Mets’ 10th-ranked prospect and will debut against the club that originally drafted him in the 28th round of the 2014 Draft. That year, he chose to honor his commitment to the University of Oregon. In 2017, the New York Mets nabbed him with the 20th selection.

Peterson spent the entire 2019 season with the Double-A Binghamton affiliate. He started 24 games there and had a 4.19 ERA. Decent numbers, but if we consider that his FIP was almost a full run lower at 3.19, he was stellar and was ready for another level.

The Mets’ wild card arm

The lack of a minor league season robbed him of a chance of some development innings at Triple-A, but since he had a great showing in spring training and summer camp, the Mets decided to challenge him with a call to the majors.

Upon reporting to spring training earlier in the year, he showed increased velocity, sitting in the 92-93 mph range and hitting 95.

“This kid, just great demeanor,” manager Luis Rojas said. “He presents as that guy that wants to compete, that wants to get you out. He’s always searching. He’s always asking questions. I like his pitchability as far as repertoire, and also controlling the running game, fielding his position. There’s just a good package there.”

Peterson edged righties Erasmo Ramirez and Seth Lugo (who will remain in the bullpen, where he is a star) in the race for the rotation spot.
