New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is loving his team’s recent surge in the month of June.
Cohen took to X to voice his pleasure in the momentum his team is currently carrying, and how he wants it to continue moving forward with the support of their electric fanbase, saying (h/t Peter Botte of the New York Post):
“There is something special happening at Citifield,” Cohen wrote. “The players have come together and are playing for each other. The atmosphere is electric. Let’s keep this going!”
Mets’ torrid month of June could lead to a hot streak in July and a surge in the standings
The Mets were 24-33 as they entered their matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on June 1 to kick off the month. After dropping that contest by a score of 10-5, New York managed to pull themselves out of a major hole in the National League East and the NL as a whole by going 16-7 to date.
Now at an even 40-40, the Mets are back in the playoff hunt, though they have some more leg work to do. They are 12.5 games back from the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies (54-29), which may be pie in the sky for them to close the gap on. Albeit, they could realistically catch up to the Atlanta Braves (46-35) who hold a 5.5-game advantage over them, especially if things continue as is.
Mets’ most recent hot play has been powered by a quintet of hitters in their lineup
New York is 7-3 in their last 10 games and enjoyed a seven-game win streak between June 12 and June 18 and just had a four-game win streak snapped by the Houston Astros in a 9-6 loss on Saturday. Ever since the Mets picked up their first win of the month in an 8-7 victory over the Washington Nationals on June 3, they’ve been rolling as a unit, and with key contributions from individual performers.
MLB.com shows that DH J.D. Martinez (.947), LF Brandon Nimmo (.935), SS Francisco Lindor (.934), 3B Mark Vientos (.926), and 1B Pete Alonso (.869) have all posted excellent OPS numbers in the last 30 days. As a team, the Mets are third in the MLB in home runs (41), second in runs (158), RBIs (153), and doubles (58) and are giving opposing pitchers fits with the fourth-fewest strikeouts (172) in that time frame.

Their pitching staff also contributed to their winning efforts, but they still have potential to tap into. Their unit was one of 12 in the big leagues that failed to throw a shutout over that course of time. Albeit, they’ve impressed with the third-fewest home runs conceded in that span (4) though they’ve gotten by with the 11th-best ERA (4.04). Their pitchers have played well throughout the year, but if they can take things to another level and meet their hitters where they’re at, a continued surge in the standings would be probable.
The Mets are one game back from the No. 6-seeded St. Louis Cardinals (42-40) and 2.5 games back from the No. 5-seeded San Diego Padres (46-41) for the final two Wild Card spots in the National League. If Cohen’s plea for the fans to keep the energy rocking at Citi Field materializes and the Mets’ roster continues doing their part on the field, those gaps could be closed as soon as this week.
