The New York Mets have struggled during a 2024 campaign that some hoped the team could see the blue and orange competing for a playoff stretch through the end of the season.
Injuries have plagued the Mets this season
Some of the reasons for the Mets’ struggles have been their extensive injury woes. Brooks Raley had to undergo season-ending elbow surgery, and Kodai Senga has missed the entirety of the season with a shoulder strain.
Francisco Álvarez tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb and needed surgery to repair the tear, while Tylor Megill and Drew Smith both suffered respective arm injuries.
In addition to the injuries, the Mets have had plenty of players underperform and one of them just got sent back to Triple-A Syracuse.
The Mets have sent Brett Baty back to Triple-A Syracuse
According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets have optioned third baseman Brett Baty to Triple-A Syracuse. After a scorching start to the 2024 season, Baty has struggled lately, going three for his last 23. Overall, the 24-year-old is slashing .225/.304/.325 across 49 games with four home runs and 16 RBIs.
Who is coming up for Baty?
Taking Baty’s spot on the roster is veteran infielder and former all-star Jose Iglesias, who will be returning to the major leagues for the first time since 2022. Iglesias has been performing well for Triple-A Syracuse, slashing .273/.309/.442 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs across 42 games.
The 34-year-old will likely primarily play the middle infield, giving the Mets some middle infield depth, which they have desperately needed since designating Joey Wendle for assignment a couple of weeks ago.
Mark Vientos, who has performed exceptionally well since returning to the major leagues, is slashing .295/.354/.591 with three home runs and six RBIs and will take over the third base role for the time being. Time will tell if Baty gets another shot in the big leagues, but it seems his chances of being a consistent everyday player for the Mets are dwindling.
