The New York Mets were a week away from inching closer to seller status at the July 30 MLB trade deadline, then a recent seven-game winning streak changed things.
While the Mets are still anticipated to make moves in the next month, one key player of theirs is likely to see his tenure in New York come to a close. Jim Bowden of The Athletic revealed that the Milwaukee Brewers will be actively searching for starting pitchers to elevate their unit. With that high priority comes ties to Mets star Luis Severino.
MLB reporter links Mets star Luis Severino to the Brewers ahead of trade deadline
Bowden had this to say about Severino as one of the Brewers’ top options (h/t Patrick McAvoy of Fan Nation’s Inside the Mets:
“Position targets: Starting pitching (and) relief pitching,” Bowden said. “SP: Jesús Luzardo, Luis Severino, Tyler Anderson, Garrett Crochet, Erick Fedde, Jack Flaherty, (and) Trevor Williams…The Brewers have made it clear to the other teams that they’re satisfied with their position player pool but want to improve their starting and relief pitching at the trade deadline.”
Severino’s strong play in 2024 would aid whichever team he’s on come August
Severino has been the best thing going for the Mets’ pitching rotation in 2024. The Dominican talent has bounced back in a major way after a down 2023 outing. He owns a 4-2 record with a 3.52 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 2024.
The 30-year-old has been the Mets’ de facto ace in the place of the injured Kodai Senga. Despite this, New York could see value in moving off of Severino. The Brewers join the Houston Astros as franchises that are linked to the former New York Yankees star.
Milwaukee (45-33) sit atop the NL Central, but are third in the entire National League, with a five-game advantage keeping them from dropping into Wild Card territory. Their pitching staff may be contributing to the sixth-best team in baseball, but collectively, they have only 20 quality starts on the campaign, which ranks a paltry No. 28 across the entire MLB. Their 604 strikeouts also place them at No. 25 overall.
The Brewers have need for Severino. He’d be a featured cog in their system. Albeit, the Mets have need for him too. It’ll be up to Mets president David Stearns to ascertain if Severino is more valuable on the trade market or as their No. 2 option the rest of the way once Senga returns.
