The New York Mets 2024 season, which once seemed doomed to failure, has made a 180-degree turn. The blue and orange are a game over .500 (46-45) and sit just 0.5 a game back of the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card spot.

However, while the Mets have turned their season around, injuries continue to pile up.

It has been a season full of injuries, but more recently, the Mets have lost Starling Marte to the 10-day injured list with a right knee bone bruise. Sean Reid-Foley to a 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement, and Drew Smith to season-ending elbow surgery.

Now, a breakout reliever is heading to the 15-day injured list.

According to a post from the organization on X, the Mets have placed relief pitcher Reed Garrett on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation.

After allowing three runs, two hits, and a walk while recording just two outs, Garrett exited Tuesday’s 7-5 victory over the Washington Nationals and complained about tightness in the forearm and elbow area.

That complaint led to the 31-year-old undergoing imaging and getting diagnosed with elbow inflammation.

Garrett has pitched 42 innings across 36 appearances this season to a 3.64 ERA and 1.429 WHIP while registering 63 strikeouts and recording four saves.

Who’s taking Garrett’s spot in the Mets’ bullpen?

Danny Young is taking Garrett’s spot in the bullpen. Young has bounced between Triple-A Syracuse and the major leagues this season.

In 13 appearances for the big league club, the Florida native has pitched 12.1 innings to a 5.11 ERA and 1.378 WHIP while striking out 16. Young has pitched 14.1 innings for Triple-A Syracuse in 15 appearances to a 1.26 ERA and 1.395 WHIP while punching out 22.

The Mets bullpen desperately needs help, and Young will have a chance to carve out a permanent role for himself regardless of Garrett’s health.
