The New York Mets made a trade yesterday for two pitchers. In a deal with the Miami Marlins, the Mets acquired RHP Elieser Hernandez and reliever Jeff Brigham. In return, the Mets dealt minor league pitcher, Franklin Sanchez.

What the Mets are getting in Hernandez, Brigham:

Starting with Hernandez, the Mets are getting a young 27-year-old arm. He spent the last five seasons with the Marlins. Over that five-year stretch, Hernandez pitched in 90 games (287.2 innings), starting 48 of those.

His career ERA is rough, at 5.04, to go along with a 10-21 record. The Mets could look to use him to round out the rotation or in the bullpen.

Brigham is 30 and also happened to spend the past five years with the Marlins. He has 53 games of experience (79.2 innings) under his belt with a career ERA of 4.52.

Brigham will be utilized in the bullpen for the Mets, where they need obvious help. The right-hander is coming off of his best year with a 3.38 ERA.

Ultimately, both the Mets starting rotation and bullpen happen to be in flux, making any type of depth they can possibly add worth it.

The Mets parted with a very young prospect in Sanchez, but one who was not in their top 30. While the resumes are not overwhelmingly encouraging, hopefully, Hernandez and Brigham, with their youth, can at least give this bullpen some sort of competition.
