Jacob deGrom’s special nine-year run with the New York Mets has officially come to a close. A tough night for all Mets fans.

Jacob deGrom leaves Mets for Rangers:

The initial report on the news came from Jeff Passan of ESPN. In his report, Passan shared that the contract is for five-year and worth $185 million. Certainly, a contract length the Mets seemingly never seemed interested in approaching.

Mike Puma of The New York Post shared that the Mets never got to a final offer with deGrom. This report happens to agree with what Andy Martino of SNY shared, that the Mets got information deGrom was already far in talks with the Rangers, leaving them unsure of what to offer.

So, in the end, the Mets could not string together one final offer with the strongest value they could.

Now, the Mets have to turn their attention to Justin Verlander and Carlos Rodon. Luckily, Martino also reported that the Mets have been “very impressed” and “enamored” with Verlander throughout the free agency process and that the organization does not necessarily view him as a Plan B.

All in all, to officially see deGrom go elsewhere is a tough pill to swallow. Since his Rookie of the Year season in 2014, deGrom attained loads of success in Queens. deGrom finishes his Mets career with 209 games, and as one of the bests, the franchise will ever have.
