According to New York Knicks coach David Fizdale, potential starting point guard Dennis Smith Jr. dominated the 5-5 scrimmages in training camp, then he slightly strained his lower back. When Fizdale was asked about Dennis Smith Jr.’s injury, Fizdale totally downplays the injury by calling it a minor strain. DSJ most likely will be held out of the Knicks’ first preseason game against the Washington Wizards for precautionary reasons concerning his lower back.

The importance of depth comes into play immediately because Elfrid Payton will most likely get the nod at point-guard during the absence of Dennis Smith Jr. The Knicks are two-deep at every position. This kind of depth will result in little to no drop-off in the quality of play on both ends during the course of the game when substitutions start taking place.

Dennis Smith Jr. improved his jumper and his overall play as a complete floor general. The former North Carolina State Wolfpack point-guard allegedly improved his playmaking skills and showed flashes during scrimmages in camp. Making the game easier for teammates is very crucial. Smith improved his body by shedding ten pounds this offseason in an effort to play high-quality basketball for longer spurts and lessen potential injuries.

The New York Knicks will need an improved Dennis Smith Jr. if fighting for playoff contention is part of the agenda. A newly improved jump-shot and ability to get others involved will do wonders for his teammates. With a new look Dennis Smith Jr. the sky is the limit for the Knicks in a wide-open Eastern Conference.
