Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN is reporting that the New York Knicks have signed head coach Tom Thibodeau to a three-year extension that will run through the 2027-2028 NBA season. After helping guide the Knicks to three different playoff berths in his four-year tenure, the veteran head coach has become a staple in Madison Square Garden and could become one of the most successful coaches in franchise history if the Knicks continue their upward trajectory.

It’s been a busy offseason that’s seen them retain OG Anunoby, trade for Mikal Bridges, and sign Jalen Brunson to a max contract, with Thibodeau marking another transaction that should help them contend this year and in the future.

As head coach of the New York Knicks, Tom Thibodeau has a 175-143 record (.550) which is a 45-win pace and far better than what this franchise has been accustomed to. Something that has maligned the Knicks in the 21st Century has been the mass turnover in management roles and the front office, and this new era of New York basketball is completely different.

Leon Rose has done an excellent job conducting trades and supporting this roster with the talent they need, and one would imagine he will overlook basketball operations with New York for a while. The development of players like Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, Isaiah Hartenstein, Miles McBride, and Donte DiVincenzo in recent years under Thibodeau has been excellent to watch, and his in-game and in-season adjustments have only improved as he’s been head coach here.

Following two straight seasons with a playoff appearance and playoff series win, the Knicks weren’t going to make a change at head coach, but with success comes expectations. New York is gearing up for a title run, but they’ll have the tall task of dethroning the Boston Celtics who mowed through the Eastern Conference and mauled the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals to clinch their league-best 18th World Championship.
