New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker has been plastered across the internet for allegations made against him on an armed robbery case, but the latest evidence suggests he could get away scot-free after witnesses reversed their initial comments.
SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano had an exclusive interview with Baker’s legal defense, in which he stated:
“He’s got an opportunity to become the next Ray Lewis and not the next Ray Rice,” attorney Patrick G. Patel said. “There’s two guys who went in two different directions. I told DeAndre that. And he seems very focused. He’s scared straight. I can say that.”
The best-case scenario is that the charges are dropped, and Baker returns to the Giants unscathed, but it’s to be determined if he will suffer any consequences in a tough Florida state.
Of course, Baker’s attorney believes the case “complete garbage” and that the four witnesses who originally spoke against Baker have recanted their testimony, saying the young NFL-defender did nothing wrong. Baker’s defense continued on to say that everything that was made public initially was wrong — from the watches he allegedly stole, to the $70K he lost gambling.
The state of Florida now has 30 days to decide if they will proceed with any charges against Baker and Seattle Seahawks corner, Quinton Dunbar. Baker is currently out on a $200K bond, $25K for each count. For now, DeAndre is stuck in Florida but will petition to enable his transfer to New Jersey, where he can be with the team moving forward.
Currently, things are seeming up for Baker, who was on the fence of losing his entire career. However, being “scared straight” also indicates he did something wrong in the first place, so he isn’t out of the woods just yet.
