New York Giants waive Canadian rookie tight end and sign long snapper

The New York Giants made a bevy of moves this week, including the signing of Logan Ryan and center Jon Halapio. Bolstering the secondary and offensive line was a priority, with the CB2 spot void of starting talent and Spencer Pulley set to earn $2.75 million in 2020. Bringing in a cheaper option to replace Pulley and Ryan to cement a starting spot in the secondary should promote a “better things ahead” narrative.

Those were the only moves the Giants made, though, as they also waived one rookie and signed another long snapper.

TE- Rysen John

John, who was a free agent from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, was trying to make the transition from wide receiver to tight end. The Giants currently have five options at the position, so John became expendable. Despite his impressive size, he was simply too weak and lanky to develop as a blocker and make an impact during the upcoming season. Releasing him was an unfortunate product of his lack of experience at tight end.

LS – Carson Tinker

The Giants did sign Casey Kreiter this off-season, who was formally a Pro Bowl long snapper. With the retirement of Zack DeOssie, the Giants elected to add another option for competitive reasons.

Carson Tinker, who didn’t play in the NFL during the 2017 and 2019 seasons, will make his return this year. Injuries have seemed to hold him back, but giving him an opportunity should push Kreiter to bring out his best self.
