New York Giants under the most pressure to become playoff team?

It’s been too long since the New York Giants have been in the playoffs. The last time out, their trip was largely colored by the infamous boat incident involving the team’s wide receivers, and the Giants haven’t been able to get back since to set things right.

Not only that, but the Giants have had one of the worst records in the league since then and have fired two head coaches before landing on their current one.

Understandably, a lot of people ranging from the fans to the team owners are ready for the Giants to turn it around and start winning. Going into this season, they’re just as under pressure as any other team in the league, not just because of their past history in recent years but also their new additions.

Bleacher Report, in a recent list, considers the Giants one of the five most under pressure teams in the league.

The pressure on the New York Giants

This offseason, the New York Giants took an aggressive approach in free agency, signing wide receiver Kenny Golladay to a four-year, $72 million deal and cornerback Adoree’ Jackson to a three-year, $39 million pact. Both list top 12 at their respective positions in annual salary, per Spotrac.

Giants co-owner John Mara made the team’s 2021 objective crystal clear.

“It’s time for us to start winning,” Mara said. “That’s one of the reasons we spent the money we did.”

As the article mentions, Dave Gettleman’s job likely depends on the success of this season. Gettleman drafted Daniel Jones, after all, and Jones has more weapons than ever this year.

The Giants spent big in free agency with the goal of turning around their record and making it into the playoffs – if the performances this year are more of the same, we can likely expect the organization to take more drastic measures than just changing around the roster.

There’s not that many other teams in a similar situation to the Giants. That is, teams that have been losing for the past four to five years but made major moves during the last offseason to revitalize themselves.

Considering that, it’s not hard to place the Giants as one of the most pressured teams in the league. But it’s hard to tell right now how they’ll respond to that. After all, the team was projected by many to be very good in the year after their last playoff appearance. Instead, they were anything but that as the current run of losing began in earnest.
