New York Giants Should ‘Heavily’ Consider Drafting This Safety in the Second Round

Having 12 picks in the 2019 NFL Draft helps the New York Giants tremendously. It allows them to trade up into any given round and grab a player with more potential and a higher probability of success.

The Giants have several holes on the team that need assistance through quality and immediate impact. One of the more troublesome positions is free safety – former Arizona Cardinals defenseman Antoine Bethea was recently signed to fill the void. Clearly, Curtis Riley didn’t pan out after being converted from cornerback.

Bethea is a solid player but is 34-years-old and father time is ticking. He signed a two year deal with the Giants that includes an out after the 2019 season. He would only count $125k against the cap if cut.

Ultimately, it would be a good idea to slot a draft pick behind him to develop and learn from the eight-year veteran.

A great free safety option the New York Giants should consider:

Deleware standout Nasir Adderley should be on the draft board for the Giants in the second or third round. The Giants have the capital to move into the top of the second round and snag Adderley if available. He’s a consistent player that showed growth every season in college.

With nine interceptions in two seasons and impressive tackling production, Adderley would be a steal at the end of the second and would fill a major gap in the Giants’ defense. His range downfield and ability to make plays on the ball stands out. He has the size of a traditional cornerback at 6’0″, 206 pounds but plays with intensity and strength.

In addition to Adderley’s instinctual prowess, he has the ability to convert to corner. If he doesn’t pan out in the backfield, he could make the switch in an attempt to salvage value. His dynamic style of play and exceptional coverage abilities should propel his stock ahead of the draft.

NFL.com has Nasir graded as a “chance to become an NFL starter.”

According to PFF, Adderley ranked as the top safety (pass rating against – 1.3). Hits like the one above contributed to a 34.8% “forced incompletion percentage” ranking 3rd in the draft class.
