The New York Giants have brought in veteran offensive lineman Mike Remmers for a meeting involving a potential deal. The former Carolina Panther and Minnesota Viking has relationships with Giants’ general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur.
The versatile veteran has had a solid career but has struggled at times in specific positions. At right guard, Remmers had one of his worst seasons but followed it up with a good year at right tackle. The Giants would be bringing him in to play the lone weak spot on the line that’s currently held by Chad Wheeler.
Remmers hasn’t been paid like a top tackle throughout his career, earning a seldom $3.9 million in 2018. The Giants could realistically grab him for under $5 million to solidify the line while they allocate draft capital towards the defense.
The consensus is that veteran quarterback Eli Manning can still be an effective option under center if he has protection. Remmers’s value centers around his ability to hold down the right side of the line, something Manning hasn’t had in quite some time.
Gettleman spent big-money last offseason to acquire left tackle Nate Solder – the former Patriot struggled early on in the season but gained confidence as the year progressed. Solder eventually went on to be one of the better linemen in the league in the second half of the season.
One of the more appealing aspects of Remmers is his bill of health. In the last four year, he’s only missed a total of five games, which is an underrated factor for the veteran. At 29-yeard-old, Remmers certainly has a few years left to perform at a quality level – the Giants would be in a good position if they managed to grab him on a cost-effective deal.
