New York Giants: 3 low-cost free agents to help fill the roster

While the New York Giants did improve this off-season exponentially on paper, there are still positions that remained weaned and scarce. The secondary remains young and inexperienced, and the addition of Xavier McKinney only aids that factor.

However, they brought in James Bradberry and will hopefully have DeAndre Baker in 2020, if he is exonerated from his legal issues. Nonetheless, exploring the free-agent market is something the Giants are likely doing at all times, and there are a few players that could fit the bill for them in their quest to stop the run at a high-level and play man coverage predominantly under Patrick Graham.

Here are three low-cost players the New York Giants could take a look at:

1.) CB Brandon Carr

Brandon Carr is most known for the incredible catch Odell Beckham Jr. had against him several years ago. However, Carr is historically a solid player who played for the Baltimore Ravens last year. He started in all 16 games and allowed a 54.7% completion rate against and five touchdowns. He is only one year removed from a 50% completion rate and zero TD performance.

While Carr is out of his prime, and he misses tackles frequently, he is a dependable piece the Giants could consider to compete on the back-end of the roster. Currently, they have Sam Beal as their number three option, which is a bit concerning considering his lack of action over the past two years. Carr’s experience in the NFC East would prove to be beneficial, and he might have some insight into the Dallas Cowboys’ methods. His experience with Jason Garrett as head coach could be an advantage as well.

2.) WR Demaryius Thomas

Demaryius Thomas featured with the Jets in 2019, posting 433 yards and one touchdown through the air. He only played on 45% of offensive snaps, which indicates he probably could’ve come close to 1000 yards receiving if he was given a full seasons workload. However, Thomas is on the back end of his career and is more of a depth piece. He would likely be cheap on a one-year deal and add experience to the Giants’ locker room.

Bringing him in to compete with Corey Coleman for the final spot on the roster would be a low cost and efficient move to spur competition. The Giants have inconsistencies across the board, especially at wide receiver after injuries hurt the unit last year. With Sterling Shepard, one concussion away from potentially ending his career, having quality back up options is always a positive.

3.) DT Mike Daniels

Daniels, who was cut by the Green Bay Packers last off-season, spent a year with the Detroit Lions in 2019. He only started in two games, but he posted 1.0 sack, 10 combined tackles, and two quarterback hits. Daniels is known as a run stuffer and played in just 18% of defensive snaps with Detroit. He has had quality performance in the past and has experience with Patrick Graham on defense.

His chemistry with Blake Martinez and Kyler Fackrell may also be a factor to consider. Daniels would likely be a cheap one-year substitute for the Giants if they want to add more depth to the interior defensive line. He has shown he can rush the passer from the interior in the past, recording five sacks in 2017 with 14 quarterback hits. Injuries have taken their toll on the big man, but bringing him in to compete with BJ Hill in a rotational spot could be a solid move.
