New York Giants: 3 keys to beating the Eagles in week 10

The New York Giants are preparing to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in week 10, and whoever wins this contest will have the best shot at securing the top seed in the NFC East.

The division is currently the worst in football, with the top team being Philadelphia with just three wins. Their score differential is -19, while every other first-place team has a positive point differential.

However, Philadelphia is gaining back several starters on offense, notably in the wide receiver corps. They gained back Jalen Reagor last week and are preparing to activate Alshon Jeffery for the contest as well. That will put the Giants in a tumultuous position, as they previously faced off against Richard Rodgers and Travis Fulgham as Carson Wentz’s primary receivers. Even so, Wentz threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to Philadelphia three weeks ago.

Three keys for the New York Giants to beat the Eagles in week 10:

1.) WIN the turnover battle

I include this key for the Giants every week, and every week it ends up being the difference-maker.

Against Washington, the Giants secured their second win of the season in week nine, winning the turnover battle 5-0. This large margin only resulted in a three-point victory for a Big Blue, but they got a “W” on the board and put them in place to continue competing for the NFC East’s top seed.

In week seven against Philly, the Giants turned the ball over three times, while Philadelphia only turned it over once. That ultimately resulted in a loss, despite it being by just one point.

If the Giants want to walk away with a win, they must keep the ball safe, and that means you quarterback Daniel Jones. Take the sack when you need to and throw the ball away if under too much pressure — Jones cannot be the culprit for losing this game, as he’s been plagued by inconsistencies this season in multiple categories.

Also, if tight end Evan Engram could secure the couch and not bobble the ball in the air 40 times, that would be nice as well.

2.) Secondary must hold up with Eagles gaining back receivers

As stated above, the Eagles are preparing to inject Alshon Jeffery back into their offense, and they are also gaining Miles Sanders back. With Wentz throwing for 359 yards with a band of misfit toys as his pass catchers, getting back these viable threats will be tough for the Giants.

Currently, the Giants’ defense ranked 27th in yards allowed per game, indicating they have a serious problem at one specific position and that one in CB2.

Last week, Isaac Yiadom allowed a perfect passer rating to Washington quarterbacks— the Giants cannot continue to go down this path. It is expected that Yiadom will continue serving as the CB2, but it was a position they committed to youth this season. The loss of DeAndre Baker significantly hurt their defense, and it will be a position the Eagles target routinely in week 10.

3.) Pass rush must get after Carson Wentz

The Giants have struggled to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks at the OLB position, so DC Patrick Graham has had to get creative with his methods. Luckily for him, interior defensive lineman Leonard Williams has wreaked havoc in the trenches, bursting through double teams and getting after the quarterback routinely.

However, the Eagles are always a pesky team to play against, even when their offensive line isn’t playing up to standard.

I anticipate the Giants relying on Williams to provide that push up front, but expect plenty of delayed linebacker blitzes and even cornerback blitzes off the edge. The Giants are going to have to get creative to stop some of the Eagles’ playmakers, and it starts with putting Wentz under pressure and forcing bad decisions.
