Former Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. is in attendance for Thursday morning’s practice in New Jersey, spending time with the Giants’ wide receiving corps and serving as a sounding board for a group of young receivers.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that “Daboll made it sound like an informal role” for Smith Sr. as he will just be helping Big Blue for a few practices this spring.

The Giants made a significant investment into their receiving corps this offseason, selecting LSU wideout Malike Nabers in the first round of the draft at No. 6 overall. Smith Sr. spoke very highly of Nabers during the pre-draft process:

Nabers and Smith Sr. share similar playing styles — physical, fast, and possessing an ability to make dynamic plays after the catch. The Giants are hoping Smith’s teaching can rub off on their new coveted rookie. Smith Sr. is a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro selection who spent 16 seasons in the NFL from 2001 to 2016.

Big Blue’s receiving corps is young with Nabers leading the group along with Hyatt who is entering his second season in the league. Smith Sr. should be a major resource for the youngsters at OTAs as they have the potential to develop into a deadly tandem for this Giants offense this season.
