PFL 2 Recap: Season opens with a bang for heavyweights and featherweights

Last night the PFL returned for their second event of the 2022 season. Taking center stage for the first time this year were the promotion’s heavyweights and featherweights. The action didn’t disappoint last night.

Starting with the heavyweights, the defending PFL champion headlined the card. Bruno Cappelozza (15-5) was looking to pick right up where he left off in the 2021 season when he took on Stuart Austin (15-8).

Austin came in as a big underdog and it was easy to see why. Cappelozza was able to get Austin down and was in a dominant position in the first round. Once there, he rained down punches that ultimately caused the fight to be stopped giving Cappelozza the first round TKO win.

Speaking of first round finishes, Renan Ferreira (9-2, 1 NC) had a massive win in his PFL season debut. Ferreira took on Jamelle Jones (12-8) and made quick work of him. This fight was thought to have a gap in skill and it was evident as Ferreira crushed Jones in just 25 seconds.

Denis Goltsov (28-7) also scored six points last night in the PFL season kickoff with a big first round finish over Cody Goodale (8-6). The heavyweights who needed to make a statement did just that last night.

PFL Featherweights and Season Standings

In addition to the heavyweights, the featherweights were looking to show out at PFL 2. In the co-main event, we saw last year’s runner-up Chris Wade (21-7) take on former PFL champion Lance Palmer (22-6).

Palmer went 0-2 last year and really needed to get a win to start out 2022 strong. However, Wade was having none of it and went on to win a decision and hand Palmer his third consecutive loss.

Also on the main card, we saw a battle between Brendan Loughnane (22-4) and PFL newcomer Ryoji Kudo (10-3). The fight was incredibly entertaining but came to a premature end in the third round.

An accidental clash of heads opened a massive cut on Kudo. Because they were in the third round, they went to a technical decision and Loughnane was awarded the victory. Bubba Jenkins (17-5) also scored a big win over Kyle Bochniak (11-6) on the prelims.
