After weeks of slow news regarding a potential sale of the New York Mets, the last 24-48 hours have been a turmoil regarding interested parties in acquiring the MLB franchise. Yesterday, it was reported that billionaire Mike Repole would be joining Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez in their bid to buy, and now, another candidate popped up.

According to Scott Soshnick of Variety, the billionaire Reuben Brothers are also considering a bid for the New York Mets. All of this comes after Steve Cohen, a famous and successful hedge funder, was very close to completing the purchase of the club from the Wilpons, but everything fell through at the last minute.

David and Simon Reuben are the names that are interested this time around. Both were born in India and moved to London, England, as teenagers.

They are rich and famous because their ventures in retail, as well as office and residential properties. They have shown interest in sports franchises, and they were linked with the possibility of buying English Premier League team Newcastle United.

Real estate possibilities around the Mets’ stadium

People around their circle speculate that they could be interested in the Mets because of the real estate possibilities around Citi Field, the home park of the team. They have a net worth of $14 billion.

Per Rotoworld, the Reuben brothers “join a list of possible bidders which includes Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris and the A-Rod/J-Lo group newly joined by Florida Panthers owner Vinnie Viola and billionaire Mike Repole.”

When Cohen was about to buy the New York Mets back in December, the transaction would have had him acquire an 80 percent stake of the team, and the team was valued at $2.6 billion in that deal. With the coronavirus and the delayed season, among other things, the Mets may not be worth that much now, but amid renewed interest from several parties, it remains to be seen if a deal is struck and at which terms.
