David Wright, one of the New York Mets’ best players of the 21st century, will not be the new manager. According to a report from Mike Puma, the captain is not interested in the position.

The position is open because Carlos Beltran, who was appointed in November to be the Mets’ skipper, stepped down. The team and the former player itself informed that it would be best if he didn’t move forward as the manager.

Beltran participated in the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. The team illegally used the replay room to decode opposing team’s signs and relayed them by banging a trash can. He was named in this week’s MLB report that resulted in the suspensions and subsequent firings of AJ Hinch and Jeff Lunhow. Alex Cora, who was the Astros’ bench coach in 2017, was dismissed by the Boston Red Sox, where he managed in 2018 and 2019.

The former Mets’ All Star doesn’t want to manage

Puma tweeted that David Wright “has repeatedly said he doesn’t want to manage at this point in his life.” The sportswriter was replying to a Twitter user that suggested the New York Mets should name Wright as the new manager.

Puma also tweeted that Wright “barely wants to be an advisor.” Since early 2019, the former third base has been a special advisor to chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen.

Wright was a fantastic player, with a career line of .296/.376/.491, 242 home runs and 970 RBI. He had a .373 wOBA and a 133 wRC+. Injuries derailed what looked like a Hall of Fame career in his later years. He last played in 2018, spending his whole trajectory with the Mets.

He accumulated 52.0 fWAR in his career, an impressive figure given that he barely played from 2014 to 2018, his final season.
