New York Mets’ rumors: Lucky Beltran, Syracuse’ coaching staff, changing names and more

Yesterday, it was a busy day for news around the MLB universe. Not because of the New York Mets, precisely, but because Major League Baseball announced the disciplinary measures to punish the Houston Astros for stealing signs during their 2017 championship run.

They used the replay room illegally to decode opposing team’s signs, and relayed them to batters by banging a trash can. Carlos Beltran, then a player in his last active year, participated in the scheme.

He went unpunished, though, so the Mets dodged a bullet. In other news, the team changed the name of its Spring Training complex.

Additionally, the Syracuse Mets’ coaching staff was revealed yesterday. We now know who will join manager Brian Schneider.

Here are the New York Mets’ news of the day:

MLB.com: Current New York Mets manager Carlos Beltran won’t face discipline for the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. He was involved, though, and MLB mentioned in its report.

However, the league decided not to punish players, even though the scheme was mainly player-driven. Beltran will likely need to face the press once Spring Training starts, though.

Beltrán was among those who “discussed that the team could improve on decoding opposing teams’ signs and communicating the signs to the batter,” per the report.

Anthony DiComo: According to DiComo, the New York Mets renamed their spring training complex for the fifth time in 17 years. It is now “Clover Park.” In the past, it was Thomas J. White Stadium, Tradition Field, Digital Domain Park. Tradition Field (again) First Data Field and, finally, Clover Park.

Michael Baron: Michael Baron reported in the last few hours the names of the Syracuse Mets’ coaching staff. Last week, Brian Schneider took over the manager job for the organization’s Triple-A affiliate.

The coaching staff will be: Schneider as the manager, Joel Chimelis as the hitting coach, DJ Carrasco as the pitching coach and Rich Donnelly as the bench coach.
