The New York Mets announced in the last few hours that Brian Schneider will be the team’s quality control coach in 2020. The move fills out their coaching staff, and as Anthony DiComo of MLB.com notes, they are doing it with a familiar face.

Schneider, not too long ago, was appointed as the Syracuse Mets’ manager. However, since Carlos Beltran and the team parted ways and the Mets promoted Luis Rojas from the quality control coach to the skipper spot, they needed someone who fills in for the newly-appointed leader.

Schneider played for 13 seasons in Major League Baseball as a catcher. Two of those seasons came with the New York Mets.

He spent six seasons in the Miami Marlins’ system as a coach before landing on Queens to manage the Triple-A affiliate.

The duties of a Mets’ quality control coach

Schneider’s duties, according to the Mets’ press release, will be “serve on the club’s Major League field staff as a conduit between the front office, coaching staff and players on issues including game preparation, strategy and analytics.” He will also be the team’s catching instructor.

“Brian is a welcome addition to our coaching staff,” manager Luis Rojas said in a statement. “He has been in a Major League uniform as a player and as a coach for the better part of the last two decades, and his insight will be a valuable tool as he communicates ideas between our front office, myself, his fellow coaches and our players.”

In more moves around the organization’s coaching staff, the Mets made their first-base coach Tony DeFrancesco their new outfield instructor. That specific task belonged to Rojas in 2019.

After the moves, the Mets’ coaching staff looks like this: Hensley Meulens will be the bench coach, Chili Davis will be the hitting coach, Tom Slater will be the assistant hitting coach, Jeremy Hefner is tasked with the pitching coach job and Jeremy Accardo will be his assistant. Gary Disarcina will be the third-base coach and Ricky Bones will be the bullpen coach.
