MLB.com published today an updated list of the New York Mets‘ top 30 prospects for the 2020 season. Shortstop Ronny Mauricio remains the best young player in the system, but there were a few changes in the list if we compare it to last year’s.
Mauricio is, still, hands down the best prospect that the Mets have. He held his own in Class-A in 2019, with 29 extra base hits (four of them home runs) and a total of six stolen bases. He had a batting average of .268.
Mauricio, covered here recently, is a switch-hitting shortstop with a more polished approach from the left side. Scouts love his projectable frame (he should add power in the future, as he is still a teenager) and the fact that he held his own being several years younger than his peers.
Brett Baty, the Mets’ first pick of the 2019 draft, fell from second to fourth on the list. It is not a knock on the third baseman’s profile, as MLB Pipeline still loves him. They wrote the following about him: “Baty’s raw power was among the best in the 2019 Draft, the product of his bat speed, strength and lofty left-handed swing. He drives the ball with authority to all fields and already generates big league-caliber exit velocities, and scouts were especially impressed with the true opposite-field power he showed during his first pro exposure.”
The second-ranked prospect is catcher Francisco Alvarez. He was fifth on the 2019 list. He had a very good season last year between two rookie-ball levels, with a .407 OBP and a .510 SLG%. Alvarez belted seven home runs in 42 games and had a 21-37 BB-K ratio, which is very good and speaks volumes about his plate discipline.
Shortstop Andres Gimenez, currently impressing the Mets’ staff in the big league camp, is ranked third. Right-handed pitcher Matthew Allan, in the fifth position, completes the top five.
