This season, Manchester City has relied on a defensive quartet comprising Manuel Akanji, John Stones, Kyle Walker, and Josko Gvardiol. The team has predominantly utilized a 4-2-3-1 formation, employing two defensive midfielders to cover gaps and feed their offensive players. With the inclusion of Gvardiol as their left-back, City has adopted a more defensive strategy on the flanks.

João Cancelo’s Season at Barcelona and Loan from Manchester City

After João Cancelo moved to Barcelona on loan, City further solidified their defensive lineup. Despite this, the Portuguese fullback has made a significant impact at Barcelona.

During his latest season, he amassed 2,222 minutes on the field, scoring two goals and providing three assists. Offensively, Cancelo excelled, ranking in the 83rd percentile for tackles and the 89th percentile for interceptions. His effectiveness on the counter-attack and offensive contributions have been particularly notable, even though he experienced some challenging defensive performances.

Barcelona is considering extending Cancelo’s loan for another season, seeing his continued involvement as beneficial. According to Sport, the Catalan club is keen to negotiate a new deal with Manchester City, especially since City has no immediate need for Cancelo with Gvardiol firmly established on the left. Furthermore, with Nathan Aké available to fill in as needed, the City defense remains well-covered.

As Barcelona anticipates the return of Alejandro Balde next season, they are seeking additional competition. Securing Cancelo at a reasonable price would offer the club valuable upside as they prepare for their upcoming campaign.
