No. 10: Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers
Jim Harbaugh is entering his first season as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers after spending the last eight years as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA. Fresh off a National Championship last season, Harbaugh is returning to the NFL. He last coached in the league with the San Fransisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, when he led the team in the Bay Area to three straight NFC Conference Championship Game appearances and one Super Bowl appearance. He has a career .695 regular-season head coaching record at the NFL level.
No. 9: Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills
Sean McDermott has been coaching the Buffalo Bills for nearly a decade at this point. He’s entering his eighth season as the Bills’ head coach with a 73-41 record. The Bills are contenders every year because of McDermott’s consistent coaching and the elite play of star QB Josh Allen. But the Bills’ postseason record of 5-6 under McDermott leaves plenty to be desired. The 2024-25 season will be a crucial one for McDermott and the Bills.
No. 8: Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins
Mike McDaniel is one of the youngest head coaches in the NFL, but he quickly turned his team into one of the best when he took over for the Miami Dolphins in 2022. For a long time, the Dolphins consistently ranked among the bottom teams in the NFL. Under McDaniel, they have made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. They have yet to win in the postseason under McDaniel, but at least he’s getting them in the dance with a 20-14 regular-season record across two seasons. The future is bright for the Dolphins under McDaniel.
No. 7: Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers have found tremendous success ever since Matt LaFleur took over as their head coach in 2019. The Packers have a 56-27 record under Lafleur. They were just a few plays away from an NFC Conference Championship Game appearance last season and are gunning for another deep postseason run this year.
No. 6: Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions
Dan Campbell has built a powerhouse in the NFC North since taking over as the Detroit Lions’ head coach in 2021. The Lions may only have a 29-33-1 record under Campbell, but they have strung together consecutive winning seasons and made their first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991 last season. Campbell and the Lions are now considered Super Bowl contenders after a few seasons culminating in a quick rebuild.
No. 5: Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
Mike Tomlin is the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, entering his 18th season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. During the nearly two decades he has been in charge, the Steelers have earned a 173-100-2 regular-season record, an 8-10 postseason record, won a Super Bowl, and never endured a losing season. Tomlin is one of the best head coaches in NFL history.
No. 4: John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
John Harbaugh is nearing his 20th season as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Entering year 17, Harbaugh is coaching a true contender with the Ravens and has an incredible 160-99 regular-season record, a 12-10 postseason record, and a Super Bowl victory. Harbaugh and the Ravens are on the hunt for another championship entering 2024-25.
No. 3: Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams
Sean McVay is entering his eighth season as the Los Angeles Rams’ head coach with a 70-45 career regular-season head-coaching record. He’s led the Rams to two Super Bowl appearances, winning one and losing one, and maintaining a 7-4 postseason record. Even as the Rams’ roster quality declines, McVay has been able to maintain their status as a winning team. The Rams will be playoff contenders for as long as McVay is their head coach.
No. 2: Kyle Shanahan, San Fransisco 49ers
Kyle Shanahan has earned his reputation as one of the best offensive-minded head coaches in the NFL since taking over as the leading man for the San Fransisco 49ers back in 2017. He has led the 49ers to four NFC Conference Championship Games and one Super Bowl appearance in the past five seasons. Shanahan and the 49ers are still searching for that Super Bowl victory, but their regular season and postseason success cannot be understated.
No. 1: Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs
Andy Reid has led the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl championships in the last five years. He has a .641 regular season head-coaching record across 403 games. Reid is one of the winningest regular season head coaches in NFL history and one of the most accomplished postseason head coaches in history as well. The Chiefs will be Super Bowl contenders for as long as Big Red is in the big chair.
