Lake Forest, IL— As Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus continues to assemble his coaching staff, the Bears agreed to terms with Luke Getsy, naming him the Bears offensive coordinator for the foreseeable future. Getsy got his NFL start under former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy in 2014 as an offensive quality control coach before being promoted to wide receivers coach. After leaving for Mississippi State in 2018 to become an offensive coordinator, Getsy returned to the Packers in 2019 as the quarterbacks’ coach before being promoted to passing game coordinator in 2020.
With Justin Fields now the Bears quarterback, it’ll be up to Getsy to develop Fields and turn him into a franchise quarterback. With the Bears officially announcing the hiring of Getsy, it’s time to breakdown what the hire of Getsy means.
1) Eberflus got his guy and moved fast, which is good for the Bears. Being a defensive-minded head coach, it was important for Eberflus and new General Manager Ryan Poles to find a top offensive mind to help develop Fields. What makes Getsy so unique is his work with Aaron Rodgers, along with developing 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love, Rodgers’ eventual successor.
2) Keep something in mind, Getsy got opportunities to interview for the Denver Broncos head coaching opening this offseason. While the Broncos hired Nathaniel Hackett, Getsy’s colleague in Green Bay, the NFL is keeping tabs on Getsy as a name to watch over the next few seasons as a HC candidate.
3) Speaking of being a hot commodity, this could very well be a make-or-break point for Getsy’s career. With total autonomy over the Bears offense, this is the Luke Getsy show. Succeed and a majority of teams will come calling very soon. Flounder and Getsy will likely go back to being a quarterbacks coach.
4) There are just two red flags that exist when looking at Getsy. First, does he have what it takes to design an offense that will fit Fields, and second, can Getsy prove to be an effective playcaller? Both of these go together when talking about the development of Fields. Expect to see the Bears offense in 2022 to feature a lot of motions and shifts, including being predicated on play-action and the running game.
5) Overall, Getsy is a high-risk, high-upside hire whose potential is through the roof. He did spend time at Mississippi State as an offensive coordinator in 2018 which bodes well as he begins transitioning into an OC at the NFL level. Whoever is hired to work alongside Getsy as QB coach will be the two most important names to watch for the Bears moving forward.
