After the 2024 UEFA Euro tournament concluded on Sunday evening, it was obvious to everyone who was the best player on the pitch. Nico Williams Jr. of Athletic Bilbao scored the opening goal in a 2–1 win for Spain over England.

There have been many rumors floating for Williams Jr. to sign with Barcelona to pair him with newly turned 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, but it is not private information that Barcelona is struggling financially.

There was a new report that came out Tuesday morning that, with their financial situation, it is unlikely that Barcelona can meet the €58 million release clause and his already high wages according to The Athletic. Williams Jr., who already makes in excess of €200k per week, would need to lower his wages in order to come to Chelsea. The club has a wage structure they do not want to break — although it would not be too much lower than what he is earning right now.

Williams Jr.’s value has never been higher following an elite Euro Cup run

Williams Jr.’s value is at the highest it has ever been in his career. After being the Man of the Match in the UEFA Euro Final against England and having a chance of being named the Player of the Tournament, he is in the form of his life.

With his blistering pace, unbelievable technicality on the ball, “five-star” skills, and, as of lately, deadly precise finishing, his talent is oozing off the screen and Chelsea would absolutely love to get their hands on a player like Williams Jr.

Here is a compilation of what Williams Jr. did this season at Athletic Bilbao:

According to Adam Leventhal of The Athletic, after the news about Williams Jr. to Barcelona potentially collapsing due to financial reasons, Chelsea are “prepared” and “have done the groundwork” surrounding a potential move to Stamford Bridge.
