New York Yankees: Sunday night’s game in jeopardy (8/16)

New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium

The New York Yankees are scheduled to play the Boston Red Sox at 7 PM on Sunday evening. What might be a bout of good luck, the weather forecast does not bode well for the start time. However, with JA Happ on the mound, a rainout might be in the best interest of the Yankees.

Through two appearances, Happ has earned a 10.29 ERA, allowing eight earned runs and seven hits. He only has three strikeouts through 7.0 innings. Nonetheless, the Yankees are moving through their starting rotation with James Paxton featuring on the mound Saturday evening. The Bombers annihilated the Red Sox 11-5, bringing their record to 14-6 on the season.

Thanks to the fantastic offensive performances from Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres, losing Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge wasn’t too problematic.

The New York Yankees enjoyed a great night with bad news:

However, the Yankees did lose star infielder DJ LeMahieu to a sprained thumb. In the fifth inning, LeMahieu overextended on a swing, immediately feeling pain in his left hand. He was removed after one inning in the infield and is scheduled to receive MRIs. While initial imaging indicated that there was no structural damage, receiving further tests to enforce that opinion is essential.

Losing LeMahieu for any period of time will be tough, considering he is batting .411 with a .456 on-base percentage. In the meantime, the Yankees will likely call upon Tyler Wade, who is also playing well with a .286 average.

It seems as if players like Gleyber Torres and Gary Sanchez picked the perfect time to snap out of their cold streaks. Frazier has also been a force at the plate, logging three hits and five RBIs on Saturday.

Paxton, who started and lasted 5.0 innings, allowed six hits and three earned runs. While his outing wasn’t overly motivating, he did touch 95 MPH with his fastball. That is a positive sign in his progression. With rain supposed to last until about 10 PM tonight, a 7 PM start time seems very optimistic. The probability of it precipitating in the Bronx is at about 50% at 7 PM, so they could wait an hour or two until it lowers to about 40% at 9 PM.
