With New York Yankees starting shortstop Didi Gregorius out for the start of the 2019 season while he rehabs from Tommy John surgery, the Bombers might be smart to look into a replacement for the time being.

There are many plug and play options, but finding one that can hold down arguably the most important infield position is a difficult task.

The Yankees could sign mega free agent Manny Machado to play his natural positions, but he would cost a fortune. A lesser options would be a player like Jed Lowrie, previously of the Boston Red Sox.

Why would the New York Yankees consider Jed Lowrie?

Lowrie is nearing 35 years-old and has enjoyed a career .295/.377/.440  battling line against the Yankees over 11 seasons. Over his entire career, the veteran has earned an average .262 BA, but recorded the most strikeouts in his entire career in 2018 (128). That stat could attest to his age catching up on him, but the bottom line is that his defensive skills are the main selling point.

Jed has always had average to slightly above defensive capabilities, which raises his stock. In the past, he has been used as a utility-man, but recently as a full-time second baseman. Moving forward, he might have to regress to an adaptable player, and the Yankees might even ask him to play shortstop.

Another options would be to insert Lowrie at second base and move Gleyber Torres over to shortstop. It will be difficult to replicate the success Gregorius enjoyed at his natural position, but the Yankees can at least place a serviceable alternative there.
