Could the New York Giants re-connect with Corey Coleman to supplement WR position?

Losing to the Chicago Bears was the least of the New York Giants’ issues on Sunday. They also lost Saquon Barkley for the year to a torn ACL and Sterling Shepard for multiple games with turf toe.

Returning from multiple concussions in 2019, Shepard was looking to make a statement in 2020. Concussions can be a reason for early retirement, and Shepard has had far too many up to this point. However, picking up an injury as strange as turf toe was not foreseen. Through two games, he only has eight receptions for 76 yards. He has been a non-factor for the Giants so far but normally is a stellar red zone threat.

With Shep set to miss a few games, the Giants could call upon former wideout Corey Coleman as a short term supplement. Alternatively, they could roll with CJ Bord and Damion Ratley.

When the New York Giants cut Corey Coleman in favor of Damien Ratley (Cleveland Browns), HC Joe Judge’s explanation was certainly interesting.

“We’re pleased with the wide receiver depth we have. I think we’re going into it right now with some speed at the position. That’s something we’re definitely looking to add right there,” Judge said. “I think we have good position flexibility with all of our skill players on offense. We feel good with where we’re at right now.”

Coleman is undoubtedly a speedy wide receiver that has immense talent. He looked good in short spurts during training camp, but the Giants elected to go in a different direction. Coleman has experienced back to back significant injuries the past two years, so it is possible he lost a step. Nonetheless, the Giants gave his roster spot to Ratley, who tallied 200 yards and one touchdown through the air with the Cleveland Browns last season. He is not a knock your socks off talent but can get the job done when called upon.

I believe the Giants will proceed with Darius Slayton, Golden Tate, Board, and Ratley, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they took a flier on Coleman, considering he knows Jason Garrett’s offensive playbook. I would keep an eye on the transaction wire prior to week three’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers.
